Arusha district council is among the two councils that forms Arumeru.Administratively is divided into 3 divisions, 20 wards, 75 Villages, 294 Hamlets and 64,339 Households. Occupies an area of 1,547.6 square kilometers.According to 2002 population and housing census the council had a population of 291,203 being 140,336 males and 150,867 females with a population growth rate of 3.4%.The Council now is approximated to have a population of 355,892 being 171,511 males and 184,381 females. Population density is 188. In the East the councils bordered by Meru district council, In the West bordered by Monduli district council, In the North bordered by Longido district council, In the South bordered by Simanjiro district council. Either this council surrounds Arusha Municipal council.




Arusha District Council is Local Government Authority established under Local Government (District Authorities) Act Cap 287 R.E 2002. As a Local Government Authority it is body corporate and have perpetual succession. Capable of entering into contract in its corporate name, holding and purchasing or acquiring in any other way and as posing of any movable or immovable property.

Agriculture and Livestock production are major economic activities of the Arusha district council residents. The District has an arable land of 78,350 ha. Land under cultivation is 36,802 (53 %.)

Based on altitude and rainfall there are three Agro-Ecological zones i.e. high, medium and low potential zones. In each zone different farming system is practiced.

In the district, a number of crops are grown both for cash and food purposes. Cash crops include Coffee, flowers, artimesia and Pyrethrum while banana, potatoes, maize, pigeon peas, sorghum, fruits and vegetables are grown for food. Coffee and flower are produced by large scale farmers who own big plantations (land). Livestock kept in the district include dairy cows and goats, indigenous cattle, chicken, goats and sheep


Availability of National Parks in both Arusha and Manyara Regions namely, Arusha, Manyara and Ngorongoro National Parks and not forgetting Tarangire National Parks in Manyara Region attracts most of the tourists from various part of the world to come in Arusha, (known as home of the world). The district council is looking for Investors to invest in this sector
